Culture & Community Center Honors Black History Month

CULTURE & COMMUNITY CENTER HONORS BLACK HISTORY MONTH


The Butte College Associated Students' Culture & Community Center (CCC) will honor Black History Month during the month of February. Black History Month began as a grassroots effort and has grown into a national time to honor the triumphs and struggles of African Americans throughout history. Activities will be focused on recognizing the central role of African-American men and women throughout history as well as the integral role in society today.

Activity Schedule:
February 4, 2015 from 12p.m. – 2 p.m. in the Culture & Community Center, Swing Space F
The Butler: Film and Discussion - Loosely based on the real life of Eugene Allen, this film follows Cecil Gaines, an African-American who eyewitnesses notable events of the 20th century during his 34-year tenure serving as a White House butler.

February 17, 2015 from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. in the Chico Center Student Lounge, CHC 146
Poetry Slam Workshop and Slam Competition - Join us and local poetry legend and two-time National Haiku Champion, Taz, in our "How to Slam" workshop followed by an empowering poetry slam contest featuring two time Individual World Poetry Slam Finalist, Jared Paul.

February 23, 2015 from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. in the Culture & Community Center, Swing Space F
African American Family Culture Center Presentation with Director, Bobby Jones - Learn about the programs and services offered by the AAFCC that help to restore cultural values and identity as well as provide mental health services to families in our surrounding community.

February 26, 2015 from 12 p.m. – 2 p.m. in the Culture & Community Center, Swing Space F
The Legacy of the Black Woman: Black Feminism, Freedom, and the Contemporary Making of the Revolution – Presenter, Jewell Bachelor, is currently a student at San Francisco State pursuing her Masters in Ethnic Studies, while faithfully working within the field of education at City Arts and Technology High School. Ultimately, her goal is to continue to work as an educator with the possibility of creating an organization that would give girls of color a space to heal through the tool of writing.
